Real estate appraisers are an important part of the real estate market - they play a key role in real estate sales and other real estate-related activities. If you want to become a real estate appraiser and be part of a growing industry, you need to complete a few steps before you start your career. Complete these steps to become a real estate appraiser:

  1. Choose an Accredited Real Estate Appraisal School - You want to ensure that you are getting the best quality education for your new career. Do your research and choose an accredited school. Accreditation means that the school has been thoroughly reviewed and determined to meet specific standards.

  2. Complete Your State Requirements - Enroll in a full appraisal package that has all of the real estate appraisal courses you need. The national appraisal license education requirements include 150 hours, including a 15-hour USPAP course. By choosing a school that offers 100% online courses, you can complete your coursework on your terms - study day or night.

  3. Take the Real Estate Appraiser State Exam - Once you complete your real estate appraisal courses, you can apply for and take the real estate appraiser state exam.

  4. Complete Experience Hours - You need to complete 2,000 hours of appraisal work over a minimum of 12 months. This needs to be completed with under the direction of a supervising appraiser.

  5. Start Your Real Estate Appraisal Career - Once you complete your experience hours and have your license in hand, you can start your real estate appraisal career.

By completing the requirements for a residential appraisal license, you will be prepared to appraise any non-complex, 1 - 4 family property with a transaction value up to $1 million; and non-residential property with a transaction value up to $250,000.
